Ziggurat Cuisine in Makati

Posted on Friday, July 11, 2014 | 0 comments

If you have a friend who is in constant pursuit of the most authentic Middle Eartern food, then most likely you'll find yourself eating at almost any Middle Eastern restaurant in the metro.  Where ever that resto is, we'll go there just because I don't mind taking a gastronomic detour too.

We had a difficult time ordering because they offer a variety of choices and their menu is not very customer-friendly.

Honey and I have agreed to just share the platter of personal size because I was not very hungry.  I just wanted to give Ziggurat a try.  On their personal platter which is good for two people, you already have some little pieces of beef, chicken, and lamb kebab.

We loved both the beef and chicken kebab and not raving about the lamb kebab cooked half-rare.  They should have told us earlier how they're going to cook it because it was our first time.

We also loved the chicken tikka because it was juicy and very easy to the jaw.  No gnawing of unexplained proportions needed.

Because of the spices used for cooking, you might have to deal with the strong Middle Eastern scent as you get inside the restaurant.

The whole time we thought the chef of the restaurant was a foreigner.  We were quite amazed that it was a Filipino cook who prepared the food.  We'd like to believe that the chef was trained in the Middle East because he has captured the essence of that part of Asia as attested by my Persian friend.

We'll give Ziggurat a rating of 3.5 over 5.

'Til our next gastronomic adventures!

Toby's Estate With Bruno

Posted on Friday, May 23, 2014 | 0 comments

It was a beautiful Sunday morning and I just woke up from the soft pillows and beds of Manila Peninsula.  All the dancing from Ann and Lar's wedding had my feet so swollen that I did not want to get out if bed.  But I realized that I have agreed to have lunch with my new Portuguese friend.

While getting ready, I took a selfie.

And another selfie.

After all the selfies, I got ready for my lunch with the Portuguese CEO hottie of iMoney Philippines and Malaysia, Bruno.

It was very warm outside Toby's Estate  but we did not have any choice because the place was jampacked.

I ordered Chorizo Burger and Bruno mentioned that he highly recommends it.

It did not disappoint me though because it tasted so good.  Had I known that he was paying for it I should've ordered more even though it may seem too much already.

This is Bruno in his just-woke-up face.  He wanted me to spare him from any photos but I did not give him what he wanted.

This is my just-woke-up face too! Hahahahahaha!!! 😜😄😂 I actually came prepared. I just had to.

Nevertheless, I think I enjoyed Toby's better this time because it was free.  I just find everything so expensive.  You know how much of a cheapskate I am.

Bruno and I had so much fun discussing everything from politics to his misadventures in Cafe Havana Greenbelt.  He has always been funny and witty and quite a charmer even to older women.  He keeps getting indecent proposals which he does not mind. Surely.

Bruno took me to a cab and I went home while he proceeded to get a haircut at guess where? Bruno's Barber Shop! How funny can it get!

Empanada Nation Makati

We tried out this new eating place near Makati Medical Center.  Its actually just beside our favorite lunch place, My Tea House.

Empanada Nation has been the talk of the workplace.  Everybody wants to know if the food was good and today is the perfect time to taste and critique the pride of Northern Luzon.

To start with, I really like the design of the place and the lighting.  The place looks big considering that it only has a few square meters to establish an ambiance for eating.

The seats were not very comfortable but thats the least of my concerns.

Food was not the way I expected it to be.

Look at the serving of Vigan longganisa. (Php 150)

Bagnet Meal for Php 150.

I got the "sulit" meal which was supposed to mean "value for money" but I was not convinced.

I'm really sorry but I am not going back for the food and I don't want to recommend it for lunch.

Should I give it a chance? Maybe I will order an empanada instead?

Let's see. Time will tell.

New Lulu Restaurant in Makati

Honey and I were famished as she just came out from a meeting and I just had my medical exam.

A day before, she has been raving about this newly opened restaurant near her workplace and being the supportive friend that I am, I said "Yes!"

So we walked two blocks and found Lulu Restaurant.  Its newly opened and the design and feel of the whole place is wonderful.  The high ceiling was refreshing and the chairs were comfortable and chic.

For our appetizer, we ordered Gambas (Php 350) and we couldn't stop praising it.  We love the sauce because it was not so spicy and the prawns were cooked perfectly.  We even ordered some more bread at an extra cost though. I told Honey that I will surely come back for this one.

That's Honey trying to take a good photo of the food.

They serve some real good Vermecelli or  noodle rice.

Honey ordered the Ultimate Pork Chop (Php 698) and I had a difficult time figuring out how her small frame can consume such a big slice of steak.  Of course, she did not finish it.   The steak-lover that she is, was overwhelmed.  She liked it but thought that the slice was too big you wouldn't even dare pounce at it.

On the other side of the table is this Saffron and Turmeric Infused Organic Chicken (Php 550).  Honestly, I am not sure if I like but I did finish it because it was an expensive dish.  It tasted weird but it works well too.  I enjoyed its soft texture as you get the feeling that the chicken melts in your mouth but of course it doesn't.

Overall, we thought the food was good but it just was too expensive.  But of course taking into consideration that it was such a nice place to catch up and be fancy at least once in your life or in my case at least once a week or maybe twice.  I always like the good stuff anyway.

We had to convince ourselves though that the price was right. Hahaha! And it was reasonable to splurge because it was payday.

Hope you get to try it and let me know what you think about this place.

Pink Panda: Southeast Asian Diner

Posted on Saturday, February 22, 2014 | 0 comments

Fridays are worth looking forward for because its the day of the week where you just chill and think of happy thoughts! (Wow! Long intro!) Look at these cute little pandas lying down on these cutesy pink flowers. That's exactly how I feel on Fridays.

To achieve that feel-good vibe on a Friday, we went to this restaurant named Pink Panda by the Celebrity Chef Erwan Heussaff along Makati Avenue.

I was expecting for pink interiors.  (Seriously?) Yes! Pink interiors for Pink Panda. (Why not? Hahaha!).

The place was not drenched in pink but I love it.  I like its modern-industrial-gone-artsy look. My other friend told me that the ceiling looks unfinished! (This is from a friend who does not know Erwan Heussaff!)

While waiting for our food, I recognized some TV personalities from the other table namely Aaron Atayde and Bom Gonzales.

Their table for God-knows-how-many.

Our table for two.

I already have a new favorite - General P's Chicken! (Php 290) It is their version of the orange chicken but this time it has some dried chilis sprinkled with fried peanuts.  We thought it was very spicy but it wasn't so it turned out to be our new fave that night.

This one is B & B's (Php 480) which probably stands for beef and broccoli.  Black Angus Ribeye Cubes cooked medium-rare was amazingly good and the stir-fried broccoli and mushrooms completed the whole satisfying experience.

The icing on top of tonights cake is seeing Erwan in the flesh!

Let's crop the girl and zoom in!

Let me now serve you, the main course.  Chef du jour, himself!

Erwan should've assured me that there were no pandas harmed to get this whole experience. (LOL!)

Some salakots and a bike hanging on the wall which we love!

I am already thinking of coming back even before finishing my plate.  It was sooooo goood and according to our chef friend, the price was reasonable for the food.  Though I might argue that the steamed rice was very expensive at Php 60.  (I had to eat at least one cup!)

Nevertheless? I was a happy pink panda when I got out of the restaurant.  My friend, Honey, felt the same way by the looks of it.

Pink Panda is the in-house restaurant of Y2 Residence Hotel located at 4687 Santiago St. corner B. Valdez & Singian Sts., Makati City, Philippines.
